Aim and scope
The Faculty of Information Science and Informatics is located in the center of Corfu Town. The Faculty is a graduate research and education community committed to expanding access to information and to improving its usability, reliability, and credibility. This requires the insights of scholars from diverse fields — Information Science and Informatics. The 'Information Science' revolves around the sciences and specifically in the interdisciplinary study of the processing, management and retrieval of information. The 'Informatics' covers both theoretical and practical aspects on the computing technologies and algorithms.
The aim of the Faculty is to enable (under)post-graduate students involvement in issues and to offer a suitable extra skills towards shaping a successful researcher, a competitive employee. The mission of the Faculty is to support and advance the broader education, research and service mission of the Ionian University by educating students, furthering knowledge, and contributing our know-how to advance humankind's improvement through information.
This mission is achieved through specific actions:
- Providing a high-quality undergraduate program in Information Science and Informatics
- Offering superior graduate programs in Information Science and Informatics
- Engaging in research and scholarly activities that advance learning through the extension of the frontiers of knowledge and creative endeavor
- Cooperating with industry and public sector to transfer knowledge
- Extending our expertise to local communities and public agencies to contribute to social, intellectual and the community
The Faculty is comprised of two departments: The Department of Archives, Library Science and Museology and the Department of Informatics. The two Departments offer both undergraduate and post-graduate degrees. The undergraduate programs lead to initial certifications with 240 ECTS credits over four academic years. Also, the post-graduate programs lead to masters and doctoral degrees in specific fields of Information science and Informatics.
